He was the son of William Brotherhood a quarry man, born 1866 in Shepshed, Leics., and his wife Elizabeth, born 1848 in Shepshed, Leics. Walter was born in 1893 in Shepshed, Leics., his siblings were Thomas, born 1890, Sarah, born 1892 and John, born 1899, all his siblings were born in Shepshed, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Hall Croft, Shepshed, Leics. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a house joiner’s apprentice and was residing in the family home at Church Street, Shepshed, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Thomas, Sarah, John, Mary, born 1901, Emma, born 1906 and Edith, born 1910, the latter three siblings were all born in Shepshed, Leics.
