He was the son of Thomas and Matilda Green. The War Diary entry for the 13th August 1916 records. BERTRANCOURT, P2a. At 12.30am “B” Company shelled with gas shells at MESNIL. Casualties, 3 wounded, 10 gassed and admitted to the Field Ambulance. At 7.00am G/85/18/1 6th Division Orders for assembly received. At 8.30am One platoon of “A” Company proceeded to ENGLEBELMER for work as before. At 9.00pm “B” Company worked on SLOAN STREET and ROBERTS TRENCH. “D” Company worked on SLOAN STREET and WELLINGTON STREET. “C” Company worked on Huts at P.22.b.8.2. (Sheet 59D 1/40000). At 10.30pm Received 6th Operational Order 73 ordering the Battalion to concentrate in CAMP P2a. One man of “B” Company admitted to the Field Ambulance wounded.

WHITWICK QUARRYMAN DIES OF WOUNDS

Official information has been received of the death of Private Samuel Green, Leicesters, who died in France shortly after being wounded in action. He was 34 years of age, and unmarried. Previous to joining the army last year he was employed at the Pelder Tor Granite Works, Whitwick, but resided with his parents at Charnwood Road, Shepshed, both of whom are over 70 years of age. Lieutenant J. Connoley, in a letter to Mr and Mrs Green says, “He was brave to the last, and nobly did his duty. Our regiment has reason to be proud of such fellows.”
