He was the son of Robert George Butlin a railway engine driver, born 1857 in Welford, Northants., and his wife Sarah Ann, born 1865 in Wymondham, Rutland. Ernest Robert was born in 1895 in Wigston, Leics., he had one sibling, a sister Constance M. A., born 1897 in Wigston, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Woodbine House, Central Avenue, Wigston Magna, Leics. In April 1911 Ernest was employed as an insurance Clerk and was residing in the family home at Central Avenue, Wigston Magna, Leics., together with his parents and sister Constance. The War Diary for today records. IN THE FIELD. 9.30pm. Patrol was sent out to the CHATEAU east of GRAND PRIEL WOODS SOUTH. This was found to be unoccupied and was immediately occupied by patrol.
