He was the son of William Shelton an ironstone worker, born 1863 in Leicestershire., and his wife Jane, born 1870 in Scalford, Leics. George, a schoolboy was born in 1897 in Scalford, Leics., he had one sibling, a brother Arthur, a farm worker, born 1896 in Scalford, Leics., in April 1911 the family home was at Scalford, Leics. George enlisted on the 20th November 1915 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 25th September 1916, joining his unit, the Nelson Battalion on the 5th December 1917 and serving with that unit until he was detached from active service on the 21st April 1917 suffering from inflammation of connective tissue and septic sores. He re-joined the Nelson Battalion on the 19th May 1917, and was then attached to the 189th Brigade, Light Trench Mortar Battery on the 28th May 1917 until he was killed in action on the 11th July 1917.
On Friday July 27th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS” – SCALFORD. DEATH AT THE FRONT.- The parents of George Shelton, R.N.R. were informed last week by his Commanding Officer, that he had been killed at the front by a shell, death being instantaneous. Deceased who was just 20 years of age, joined the R.N.R. with his brother, who is presently in hospital at Blandford, suffering from wounds. Much sympathy is expressed for the parents in their bereavement. On Friday August 10th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS” – SCALFORD. MEMORIAL SERVICE.- A service was held in the Wesleyan Chapel on Sunday evening in memory of George Shelton and Conway Randell, who have died in the service of their country, the former being killed by a shell, and the latter from the effect of the heat at the Persian Gulf. It was conducted by the Rev. W. Hoad.
