He was the son of Thomas Congrave a wagon works frame fitter, born 1874 in Odstone, Leics., and his wife Mary Ann, born 1870 in Banham, Norfolk. Harold Fred was born in 1897 in Ravenstone, Leics., his siblings were, Arthur William, born 1896 and Thomas Eric, born 1901, both his siblings were born in Ravenstone, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Snibston, Leics. In April 1911 Harold was employed as a house painter and was residing in the family home at Wash Lane, Ravenstone, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Arthur, Thomas, Lucy Alice, born 1904 and Agnes Belinda, born 1907, the latter two siblings were both born in Ravenstone, Leics., a further daughter Ida M. was born in 1912. Harold had been a miner at Snibston Colliery before enlistment, and had been a member of the Parish Church Choir and assistant scoutmaster of the Ravenstone Troop. He was killed during an attack against Epehy, near Cambrai. The War Diary for today records. “14 WILLOWS ROAD”. Enemy counter attack anticipated but no enemy action followed. Artillery activity. Battalion relieved by 1st CAMERONIANS. Relief completed by 12.00 midnight. Battalion moved to MANANCOURT to billets.
