He was the son of Thomas Edward Bursnall a farm teamster, born 1874 in Frisby on the Wreake, Leics., and his wife Lucy, born 1872 in Saltby, Leics. Albert Edward was born in 1895 in Stonesby, Leics., his siblings were, George William, born 1899 and Charles Robert, born 1901, both his siblings were born in Stonesby, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 3, Stonesby Church Street, Stonesby, Leics. In April 1911 Albert was employed as a general labourer and was residing in the family home at Stonesby, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, George, Charles, Herbert John, born 1903, Thomas Ernest, born 1905, Grace Lilian, born 1908 and Cyril, born 1911, the latter four siblings were all born in Stonesby, Leics. On Friday March 30th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “STONESBY” – SOLDIER’S DEATH.- We greatly regret to record the death, killed in action on March 5th, of Private Albert E. Bursnall of the Leicester’s. Deceased who was 20 years of age, voluntarily enlisted in October 1915, before which he was working for Mr D. Ward, Bescaby. He was a smart boy of very cheery disposition, and son of Mr Tom Bursnall, parish clerk of Stonesby. He was one of the bell ringers at Stonesby Church. On Sunday the Rev. B. H. Smith, vicar, spoke in sympathetic terms of his manliness, heroism and sterling character. The War Diary for today records. HOHENZOLLERN RIGHT SUB SECTOR. Battalion moved into front line relieving 8th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. Front was extended from POST 8 to GORDON ALLEY. Three Companies in the front line and one Company in support line. Battalion HQ. at EXETER CASTLE. Casualties 1 other rank killed and 1 other rank wounded. Usual trench warfare. Enemy’s trench mortars very active. A number of gas shells sent over in various parts of our line.
