The War Diary for today records. HOHENZOLLERN FRONT LINE SECTOR OF TRENCHES. From 8.00 to 11.00am the enemy carried out an organised ‘strafe’ with mortars of all sizes. Considerable damage was done to our trenches, the sap at the top of LINCOLN STREET being blown in. Retaliation was asked for by the right sector, but the spasmodic efforts by our 18 pounders and Stokes mortars seemed quite unable to make any impressions. At 10.00am a medium trench mortar fell close to junction of VIGO STREET and SAVILLE ROW, killing 4 men and wounding 5 others. The enemy seemed to have been searching for our trench mortars round DRUMMOND TRENCH and SAVILLE ROW.
