He was the son of John and Lizzie Ann Tomlinson. The citation in the London Gazette for 25th November 1916 reads:- “For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded and fought four trench mortars with great courage and determination. He stood on the parapet to observe the fire of his guns. He set a splendid example throughout the operations.”
