He was the son of Richard Manton. The War Diary for today records. TRENCHES. Night and morning quiet. At 2.15pm enemy used trench mortar against our front line trench as yesterday. All men were cleared from action of trench bombarded. About 40 rifle grenades were fired by enemy and fell between our front and support lines. We attempted to retaliate with a trench mortar but fire was ineffectual. Considerable damage was done to our front line trench which was repaired during the night by a fatigue party from B Coy.
