Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the son of Mr and Mrs H. Johnson. The War Diary for today records. Very little hostile activity. An odd -?- bomb falling in one of our posts, unfortunately killed 1 man and wounded 1 Sergeant and 2 other ranks, the Sergeant dying of wounds the next morning. At 11.10pm 2nd Lt H. MARKHAM took a patrol of 7 other ranks out on the left Coy (JACKSON) front, to endeavour to rush a German post opposite. The party unfortunately came upon the post earlier than expected and was met with a fusilade of bombs and rifle shots. They however threw all their bombs into the post and 2nd Lt MARKHAM having been shot through the foot, the patrol withdrew in good order, with the exception of No. 201503 Private J. HERBERT, who asserted that they were returning in the wrong direction. He broke away from the patrol and ran towards the enemy lines. A search was made for him later, without success. All identifications had been removed from him before the patrol left our lines. With the exception of the above incident the night was quiet.
