He was the son of James Chapman a bank caretaker, born 1853 in Market Harborough, Leics., and his wife Lois, born 1862 in Oakham, Rutland. Bertie Mayhew was born in 1892 in Glenfield, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Bank Chambers, Town Hall, Loughborough, Leics. In April 1911 Bertie was employed as a footman and was residing as a servant at Trelissick, Truro, Cornwall.
