He was the son of Albert Chapman a commercial traveller, born 1863 in Coalville, Leics., and his wife Clara, born 1862 in Leicester. Arthur Donald was born in 1892 in Loughborough, Leics., his siblings were, Albert R., born 1891 in Leicester, Kathleen M., born 1894, Clara D., born 1896, Olive M., born 1899 and Adeline S., born 1901, the latter four siblings were all born in Loughborough, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 12, Herrick Road, Loughborough, Leics. In April 1911 Arthur was employed as a boot and shoe trade student and was residing as a boarder at 218 & 220, Kettering Road, Northants.
