He was the son of John Bramley a bricklayer, born 1858 in Loughborough, Leics., and his wife Martha, born 1868 in Loughborough, Leics. Gilman was born in 1894 in Loughborough, Leics., his siblings were Ellen, born 1888, Florrie, born 1890, Ada, born 1898 and Eva, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Loughborough, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 46, Mill Street, Loughborough, Leics. In April 1911 Gilman was employed as a store room attendant and was residing in the family home at 84, Wood Gate, Loughborough, Leics., together with his widowed mother a hosiery winder, and his siblings, Ada, Edward, born 1903 and Aaron, born 1905, the latter two siblings were both born in Loughborough, Leics. The War Diary for today records. POLYGON WOOD. The day was fairly quiet. From 5.30 to 7.30pm. heavy shelling. At 8.00pm. “C” and “A” Companies moved up to the front line at REUTEL J.11.c. relieving elements of 9th and 10th KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY and 1st EAST YORKSHIRE REGT. “B” and “D” Companies moved into local support J.11.c. The relief was quiet. One Company 8th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. and one Company 9th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. moved into reserve at J.11.c. and came under orders of the 7th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. 6th LEICESTERSHIRE REGT. were on the left and the CHESHIRE REGT. (5th Division) on the right.
