He was the grandson of William George Naylor a retired agricultural labourer, born 1841 in Preston, Rutland, and his wife Lucy, born 1847 in Thrussington, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Charles, who was born in 1893 in Whitwell, Rutland, was employed as an agricultural labourer, and was residing in the family home of his grandparents at Preston, Rutland together with his brother Edwin, a schoolboy, born 1904 in John O' Gaunt, Leicestershire and his cousins Ralph Naylor, a shepherd, born 1878 and Roland Naylor, a wagoner, born 1886, the latter two cousins were both born in Preston, Rutland. He was the son of Mr Jeremiah and Mrs M. Smith and from the age of two until he was nineteen he was brought up by his grandmother Mrs Lucy Naylor. He was a railway porter before enlisting on the first day of the war. He was promoted on the 4th December 1914 to Lance Corporal, and on the 20th December was promoted to the rank of Corporal, and on the 7th February 1916 was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He embarked for France on the 4th May 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. He was killed by a shell. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion had left Vauudricourt the previous day and had arrived at Bully Grenay and were standing to with no orders. There were no casualties recorded.
