Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the second son of Mr C. Thorpe of Braunstone Gate House, Oakham, Rutland, and the husband of Mrs Minnie Thorpe, he left four children. Before enlistment he had been employed in the shoe trade. He embarked on foreign service to Mesopotamia on the 12th May 1917, and he died in No.32 General Hospital, Amara from dysentery and heat stroke. In a letter of sympathy to his widow, one of the nursing sisters wrote:- “He often mentioned you and the dear children, and we were so hoping to be able to send him home to you again. It seems so terrible our men dying so far from all their loved ones. They certainly are doing their bit for their country, and I admire all you brave women who spare your men.” Other sources show his place of residence as 9, Simper Street, Oakham, Rutland.
