He was the son of Mrs Emma Mayes. He enlisted in the 1st Bn. Northamptonshire Regiment at the age of 18, and served in India for several years, on the expiration of his service he took up the trade of saddler. Upon the outbreak of war he immediately rejoined his regiment, and went to France in August 1914 with the original Expeditionary Force. He was in the retreat from Mons and the re-advancement to the Aisne and was killed by a shell. The shell killed eleven men, and wounded several others of “B” company of which he belonged. They were buried on the spot. A cross was put on the grave with the words : “Here lies half a section of “B” Company of the 1st Northants.” The War Diary for the 17th September 1914 records. Still very wet. Enemy attacked us in force about 1.30pm. order to charge them out of trenches too close to our line. Captain PARKER killed leading the charge which was successful. An unfortunate incident occurred in which 2 officers many of our men were killed. The enemy showed the white flag – some few surrendered, but it was a trap, when our men were exposed they fired under cover of the flag.
