He was the husband of Alice Culpin. Prior to enlistment he had been a postman since the age of fourteen, and was employed in the Oakham Post Office. His record was an excellent one, and on his death his widow received a letter from the Postmaster General bearing testimony to his excellent character. After enlistment and training he embarked for France on the 23rd May 1917, and then transferred to Salonica. It was here where he subsequently died of bronchial pneumonia, being buried in the Military Cemetery near Viles, Serbia. His Commanding Officer wrote:- “Throughout the advance he worked splendidly, never sparing himself in his duty and facing every difficulty with cheerfulness and vigour.” His brother Ernest H. also died.
