He was the son of Albert Henry Cooper a railway labourer, born 1864 in Pilsgate, Northants., and his wife Margaret Ann Cooper (nee Hurst), born 1866 in Oakham, Rutland. Albert Edward was born in 1895 in Oakham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at High Street, Gaol Lane, Oakham, Rutland. In April 1911 Albert was employed as a solicitors errand boy and was residing in the family home with his parents at King’s Road, Oakham, Rutland, also residing with the family were his maternal uncle’s, William Hurst a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1864 and Edward Hurst, a boot and shoe machinist, born 1882, the latter two uncle’s were both born in Oakham, Rutland, and Edward’s wife Georgina Hurst, born 1892 in Westbury, Bucks., and their children, Michael Hurst, a schoolboy, born 1902 and James Edward Hurst, born 1911, the latter two children were both born in Oakham, Rutland. The War Diary for today records. Q.16.a.3.3. At dawn patrols of “B” and “D” went forward to establish themselves in COMMON LANE and LOGGING SUPPORT supplied by their Companies. The crossing was made at the MILL BRIDGE Q.24.a.5.3. There was a thick ground mist. When over the bridge both Companies came under heavy machine gun fire, holding up operations. Lt. HACKETT was killed. “B” and “D” Companies were withdrawn to west of RIVER ANCRE. A barrage of 105mm and 150mm Howitzers was put down by the enemy during the withdrawal. Both Companies had a few casualties.
