He was the son of Edward Chalkley a railway telegraph linesman, born 1865 in Derby and his wife Eliza Ann, born 1866 in Derby. Horace was born in 1896 in Peterborough, Northants., his siblings were, Selina, born 1888 in Derby, Ernest Edward, born 1890, William Thomas, born 1893 and Ethel Mary, born 1895, the latter three siblings were all born in Peterborough, Northants., in March 1901 the family home was at Barnes Cottages, Braunston Road, Oakham, Rutland. In April 1911 Horace was employed as a baker’s apprentice and was residing in the family home at Braunston Road, Oakham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, Selina, Ernest, William, Ethel, Alfred Henry, born 1901, Florence May, born 1905, Leslie, born 1907 and Phyllis Lilian, born 1909, the latter four siblings were all born in Oakham, Rutland. He embarked for France on the 4th June 1917, and was killed in action by a shell whilst engaged in carrying food to the men in the front line trenches. His platoon officer writes:- “He was keen, cheerful and willing, he never groused, and was a tower of strength in keeping the platoon in good spirits. He has given his life to help his country at the time of her greatest need, and he gave it cheerfully and willingly in the splendid way his fine character would make him.”

He was killed in action on 31 August 1917 in Belgium. He was 21
He was the son of Edward and Elvia Ann Chalkley, Bridge Terrace Braunston Road, Oakham
He is buried in grave VI G 2 Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, near Ypres
