He was the son of Arthur Carter a brewer’s drayman, born 1868 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Mary, born 1873 in Silverdale, Staffs. Herbert was born in 1898 in Oakham, Rutland, his siblings were, Joseph A., born 1895, Ernest, born 1897 and Albert Edward, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Oakham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at South Street, Oakham, Rutland. In April 1911 Herbert was a scholar and was residing in the family home at South Street, Oakham, Rutland, together with his parents and siblings, Ernest, Albert, Mary Beatrice Holland Carter, born 1902, Charley, born 1907, Elizabeth, born 1908, Sidney, born 1909 and Edward, born 1911, the latter five siblings were all born in Oakham, Rutland. Prior to enlistment he was a bootmaker. He embarked for France on the 30th April 1917, and was killed in action on Hill 60, Belgium.
