He was the son of Robert Hyslop, a boot factor, born 1859 in Leicester and his wife Louisa Emma Hyslop (nee Wood, married in the 2nd quarter of 1886 in the Leicester district), born 1867 in Leicester, and who was the daughter of Sir Edward Wood J.P. Robert Edward was born on the 19th February 1889 in Leicester, he had one sibling, a sister Mary, born 1887 in Leicester, in April 1891 the family home was at Abingdon Road, Leicester. In March 1901 Robert was residing in the family home at 16, West Walk, Leicester, together with his father, a boot factor, his mother and siblings, Arnold George, born 1897 and Ronald, born 1900, the latter two siblings were both born in Leicester. In April 1911 Robert was absent from the family home at Manor Road, Oadby, Leicestershire, residing there was his father, a director of Messrs. Freeman, Hardy Willis Limited, his mother and siblings Mary and Arnold, a schoolboy, Robert was employed as a boot and shoe retailer and was residing as a visitor at The Vicarage, Hungarton, Leicestershire. Robert married Margaret Stacpoole Ellis, born 1884 in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, on the 19th April 1911 at Hungarton, Leicestershire, who was the daughter of the Reverend John Ellis, they had two children, Robert Mark, born on the 12th November 1911 and Edward John, born on the 22nd December 1912.
Robert was educated at St. Andrew’s, Eastbourne, Sussex and Malvern College. He enlisted into the Special Reserve Officers Services and was mobilized on the 10th July 1915 and posted as 2nd Lieutenant to the 4th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. He gave his wife Margaret Stacpoole Hyslop of The Cottage, Brome, Eye, Suffolk as his next of kin. Resigned his commission on account of ill health on the 14th November 1915, having served 128 days. On his recovery he re-enlisted, and joined the 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment where he attained the rank of Acting Sergeant, he served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, and died on the 21st November 1916 in the 18th Field Ambulance from opium poisoning, self administered.
