He was the son of James Potterton, a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1860 in Oadby, Leics., and his wife Catherine Potterton (nee Clewlow, married q1 1892 in the Leicester district), a char woman, born 1862 in Stoke on Trent, Staffs. Sydney Clewlow was born in q1 1894 in Leicester, in March 1901 the family home was at 1, Leicester Road, Oadby, Leics. In April 1911 Sydney was employed as a wine and spirit merchant’s cellarman and was residing in the family home at Regent Street Cottage, Oadby, Leics., together with his father, a general labourer, his mother and brother Wilfrid George, a schoolboy, born q3 1905 in Oadby, Leics.
