He was the son of Amos Sturgess a hosiery framework knitter, born 1848 in Oadby, Leicestershire and his wife Rachel Sturgess (nee Bowles, married in the 4th quarter of 1875 in the Leicester district), born 1854 in Oadby. Thomas Wilfrid, a schoolboy, was born in the 4th quarter of 1895 in Oadby, his siblings were, Edith Christiana, a sock seam machinist, born 1877, Florence Clara, a sock seam machinist, born 1880, Marian Jessie, born 1883, Lilian Maria, a sock seam machinist, born 1885, Ernest Charles a hosiery machine winder, born 1888, Rachel, a schoolgirl, born 1891 and Gladys May, a schoolgirl, born 1893, all his siblings were born in Oadby, in March 1901 the family home was at Spencer Street, Oadby. In April 1911 Wilfrid was employed in a hosiery warehouse and was residing in the family home at Spencer Street, Oadby, together with his father, a glove trade worker, his mother and siblings, Clara, a confectionary shop keeper, Jessie, Charles, a hosiery sock worker, Rachel, a hosiery sock worker and Gladys, a hosiery sock worker, also residing in the family home was Wilfrid’s niece Olive Sturgess, a schoolgirl, born 1901 in Oadby. Wilfrid also had an older brother, John Albert, born 1879 in Oadby. Although registered at birth as Thomas Wilfrid, he was always known as Wilfrid.
The War Diary records: 25 Sep-16 - HAPPY VALLEY. At 8.00am “B” and “C” Companies worked on construction of track from GUILLEMONT through GINCHY towards LES BOEUFS. At 12.35 The attack of the 4th Army was entirely successful and by the evening the whole of LES BOEUFS, MORVAL and GUEDECOURT had been captured which the FRENCH had captured FREGICOURT.
