Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the husband of Gertrude Rowley. The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the process of moving to Proven via Doullens. At 4.30am Brigade Operational Order 287 received. No Battalion Operational Order issued, all necessary instructions being given verbally. Transport moved to Doullens by road. At 11.15 the Battalion left camp, total strength with transport 9 officers and 320 other ranks, and marched to Puisieux au Mont. Entrained at 3.00pm and arrived at Doullens at 8.00pm. Battalion moved from the station and bivouacked for the night at the citadel, Doullens. Enemy aircraft bombed the vicinity of Doullens station during the night, but did not do much damage. There were no casualties recorded. It must be assumed that William was a casualty from the bitter fighting that took place on the 21st and 22nd March in the Vaulx-Morchies Line.
