Mr Rothwell was an international hockey player. He played 4 times for England, scoring 5 goals, and once for the British International XI. He was a forward, playing in the position of inside-left.

The Great Britain hockey team did not officially exist until 1948. However, a British team played international opposition in 1935 and 1938 and the team was known as the British International XI. Matches played by the British International XI have been retrospectively classified as official Great Britain matches.

All of Mr Rothwell's international appearances were in 1938. He is therefore credited with one cap for Great Britain, and 4 caps for England. His first international match was on 5 March 1938 for England, against Wales, in Cardiff, where he scored twice in a 5-0 win. His final international match was on 5 June 1938 for the British International XI, where they lost 2-1 to Germany, in Munich.

The Hockey Museum would be very interested in finding any family of Mr Rothwell that exists.
