He was the son of Alfred Charlton a stone quarry worker, born 1851 in Enderby, Leicestershire and his wife Sarah Ann Charlton (nee Storer, married in the 4th quarter of 1879 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), born 1857 in Enderby. Cecil Alfred was born on the 29th August 1890 in Enderby, and was baptised on the 2nd November 1890 in the parish church Enderby, his siblings were, Thomas, born 13th February 1882, Robert, born 18th April 1884 and Wilfred, born 12th January 1888, all his siblings were born in Enderby, in April 1891 the family home was at The Folley, Shortridge Lane, Enderby. In March 1901 Cecil was residing in the family home at King Street, Enderby, Leics., together with his father a stone quarry sett maker, his mother and siblings, Eliza, a Griswold stocking knitter, born 1881 in Enderby, Thomas, a stone quarry mason, Robert, a stone quarry mason, Wilfred, Ernest, born 1894, Edith, born 1896 and Lilian, born 1899, the latter three siblings were all born in Enderby. In April 1911 Cecil was employed as a shoe trade finisher and was residing in the family home at King Street, Enderby, together with his father a stone quarry kerb dresser, his mother and siblings, Robert, a stone quarry kerb dresser, Wilfred, a farm cow man, Edith, a shoe trade finisher, Lilian, a schoolgirl and Edgar, born 15th December 1905 in Enderby. Alfred was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
