He was the son of George Atkins a Boot Maker, born 1874 in London and his wife Sarah J., born 1874 in Coalville, Leicestershire. Alfred was born in 1898 in Leicester, his siblings were, Constance Lydall Atkins, born 1888, Sarah Lydall Atkins, born 1890, Hilda Lydall Atkins, born 1893, Evelyn Lydall Atkins, born 1895 and Frank, born 1903, all his siblings were born in Leicester. In March 1901 the family home was at 50, Porter Street, Leicester. In April 1911 Alfred was a Schoolboy residing in the family home at 42, Grove Road, Leicester. On Thursday February 15th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – DEATHS. ATKINS.- Rifleman A. G. Atkins (Post Office Rifles), dearly loved eldest son of Mr and Mrs George Atkins, 42, Grove Road, previously reported missing now officially reported killed in action May 21st 1916, aged 18 years.
