He was the son of Edward Greaves, a grazier, born 1848 in Nether Broughton, Leicestershire and his wife Emma Elizabeth Greaves (nee Hatton, married on the 12th May 1881 in the Parish Church, Nether Broughton), born 1849 in Old Dalby, Leicestershire. William Hatton, a schoolboy was born on the 26th April 1883 in Nether Broughton and was baptised on the 1st July 1883 in the Parish Church, Nether Broughton, his siblings were, Albert, a schoolboy, born 1883, Herbert Walter, born 1886 and Frank, born 4th May 1888, all his siblings were born in Nether Broughton, in April 1891 the family home was at Green Hill, Dalby Road, Nether Broughton. In March 1901 William was residing in the family home at Hickling, Nottinghamshire, together with his father a grazier, his mother and siblings, Albert, Herbert, a farm plough boy and Frank. In the 4th quarter of 1908, in the Bingham, Nottinghamshire district, William’s mother died aged 60. In April 1911 William was absent from the family home at Langar, Barnstone, Nottinghamshire, residing there was his widowed father, a farmer and his siblings, Albert, working on the family farm, Frank, working on the family farm and Herbert, a cycle dealer, also residing in the family home was William’s sister in law, Albert’s wife, Mary Ann Greaves, born 1879 in Allington, Lincolnshire, William was a cycle dealer and was residing in the family home at Long Clawson, Leicestershire together with his wife Ada Louisa Greaves (nee Turner, married on the 4th July 1907 in St. Wulfram’s Church, Grantham, Lincolnshire), born 1883 in Grantham, Lincolnshire and their daughter Rhoda Margaret, born 16th February 1908 in Langar. William died of pneumonia in Cork, Ireland, and was buried on the 9th November 1918 in Thorpe Road Cemetery, Melton Mowbray. William’s father remarried and resided with his wife Harriett at 322, Humberstone Road, Leicester.
On Friday November 8th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.” – DEATHS. GREAVES. – On the 3rd inst., in Ireland, Pte. Greaves of Bishop-st., Melton Mowbray.
