He was the son of George Marriott, a platelayer, born 1869 in Hose, Leicestershire and his wife Elizabeth Annie Marriott (nee Smith, married on the 4th January 1892 in Welby Parish Church, Leicestershire), born 1872 in Nottinghamshire. Frederick John was born in the first quarter of 1899 in Long Clawson, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Beatrice Annie, born 1892 in Welby, Leicestershire and Gertrude Alice, born 21st July 1897 in Hose, in March 1901 the family home was at The Vicarage, Hose. In August 1910 in Asfordby, Leicestershire, Frederick’s mother died aged 39, she was interred on the 30th August 1910 in Asfordby. In April 1911 Frederick was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 12, The Valley, Asfordby, together with his widowed father, a wagoner and his siblings, Beatrice, William Henry, born 1905, Ada Ruth, born 1906, the latter two siblings were both born in Hose and Hilda, born on the 30th May 1909 in Asfordby Valley and baptised on the 18th November 1911 In Asfordby Parish Church. Frederick had enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment, being transferred to the 6th Battalion, 9th Battalion and finally the 2/4th Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals. He gave as his sole legatee his sister Gertrude Alice Riley, who was in 1939 residing at 32, Mayfield Street, Melton Mowbray, with her husband Thomas Riley, a general labourer, born 19th January 1897 and their children, James Riley, a general labourer, born 6th November 1921, Gertrude Annie Riley, born 25th June 1925 and William Riley, a schoolboy, born 1928.
The War Diary records: 28 Mar-18 – The counter-attack was launched at 4.15 am. Two tanks which had been left in the South East corner of ROSSIGNAL WOOD were found to be occupied by the enemy and proved very strong points which were not reduced. The formation for the counter-attack was as follows. 4.15 am. Remnants of “A” and “B” Companies on left, “D” Company on right of 1st wave. 1 Company YORK & LANCASTER REGIMENT on left, one in centre and one of 5th KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY on right of 3rd wave. “D” Company and the 5th Battalion Companies gained their objectives. They were then cut off and nothing was heard of them after 8.00 am. Throughout the day K.6 was heavily shelled. In the evening “C” Company was relieved by the AUSTRALIANS and rejoined the Battalion. The line was then reorganised and the Battalion held from about L.1.c.5.3 to K.12.a.8.7.
Casualties: Captain G. L. HUDSON, 2nd Lieutenant N. ROGERSON, 2nd Lieutenant J. POWNALL missing. Other ranks estimated at 180. Strength of Battalion in the line now reduced to 7 Officers and approximately 200 other ranks.
On Friday May 24th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – OFFICIAL LOCAL CASUALTIES. – The following local names appeared in Friday’s official casualty lists:- Missing: King’s Own (Yorkshire L.I.) Marriott, 36259 F. (Melton Mowbray).
