He was the son of Edwin Edward Smart, a brewery drayman, born 1869 in Redmile, Leicestershire and his wife Elizabeth Smart (nee Buttery, married on the 28th September 1898 in Melton Mowbray Parish Church), born 1867 in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire. Harry was born in the 3rd quarter of 1899 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire and was baptised on the 6th August 1899 in Melton Mowbray Parish Church, in March 1901 the family home was at 16, Scalford Road, Melton Mowbray. In April 1911 Harry was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at 16, Algernon Road, Melton Mowbray, together with his father, a labourer and his mother. Harry died from wounds received in action at the IV London General Hospital, Denmark Hill, London on the 27th November 1918 and was buried with Full Military Honours on the 4th December 1918 in Thorpe Road Cemetery, Melton Mowbray. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
On Friday December 6th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.” – DEATHS. SMART. – On the 27th November, at the 4th London General Hospital, Pte. Harry Smart, M.G.C., of Melton Mowbray, aged 19 years.
And in the same issue under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.” – THANKS. Mr. and Mrs. Smart, 16, Algernon-road, desire to thank all kind friends for expressions of sympathy in their bereavement and the soldier bearers who were present at the funeral.
