He was the son of Thomas Durrance a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1861 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., and his wife Georgina Durrance (nee Jackson), born 1859 in Saltby, Leics. Herbert was born in 1894 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., his siblings were, Thomas, a brickyard labourer, born 1878, Hettie, a wool spinner, born 1886, Florrie, born 1888, Edith, born 1898 and Ruth, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Melton Mowbray, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 15, Pall Mall, Melton Mowbray, Leics. In April 1911 Herbert was employed as a laundry worker and was residing in the family home at 22, Victoria Street, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Florrie, a schoolgirl, Edith, a schoolgirl and Marjorie, born 1904 in Melton Mowbray, Leics. On Friday August 24th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MELTON SOLDIERS KILLED. Mrs Durrance of 22, Victoria Street, Melton Mowbray, has received official intimation this week that her son Private Herbert Durrance of the Leicestershire Regiment, has been killed in action, his death having taken place on July 31st. Private Durrance was in the regular army, having joined H.M. Forces some five or six years ago. On Friday August 31st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – THANKS. Mr Thos. Durrance and family desire to express their sincere thanks to all their friends and neighbours who have expressed their sympathy with them in their recent sad bereavement.
