He was the son of Arthur Boulton a groom and gardener, born 1875 in Oakham, Rutland and his wife Annie Laura, born 1876 in Whissendine, Rutland. Thomas Vernon was born in 1897 in Whissendine, Rutland, his siblings were Elizabeth K., born 1896 and Clara Maud, born 1900, both his siblings were born in Whissendine, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Ashwell Road, Whissendine, Rutland. In April 1911 Thomas was residing in the family home at Waltham on the Wolds, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Clara, Hilda Bertha, born 1902 in Whissendine, Rutland and Sybil, born 1911 in Waltham on the Wolds, Leics. Prior to enlistment he was engaged in farm work, after training he embarked for France on the 26th February 1917, being killed in action on the 9th May of the same year. On Friday June 15th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” - The following local casualties are officially reported. From Tuesday’s list:- KILLED. SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE REGIMENT. Boulton, 242111 V. (Melton Mowbray). In the same issue the following article was published under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” - MELTONIAN KILLED IN ACTION. Official notification has reached Mr and Mrs Arthur Boulton, 33, Belvoir Street, Melton Mowbray, of the death of their son, Pte. Thomas Verdon (Vernon) Boulton, South Staffordshire Regt. who was killed in action on the 9th ult. He was 19 years of age, and enlisted on the 11th May last year. Up to that time he was in the employ of Messrs. Adcock, Pacey and Co., Egerton Brewery, Melton Mowbray, for whom his father also works. Deceased was a native of Whissendine and spent his boyhood days at Waltham, where his parents went to reside before coming to Melton. Corpl. Jamson, in a letter states that Pte. Boulton was killed by a shell which burst in a dug-out, another youth who belongs to Stowbridge (Stourbridge) being killed at the same time.
