He was the son of Thomas Bott a domestic coachman and servant, born 1850 in Fotherley, Staffs., and his wife Mary Bott (nee Fretsome), born 1846 in Billesdon, Leics. Robert Dexter Bott was born in 1885 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., his siblings were John T., born 1876 and Ada A., born 1877, both siblings were born in Quorn, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 24, Pall Mall, Melton Mowbray, Leics. In March 1901 Robert was employed as a grocer’s assistant and was residing in the family home at 38, Mill Street, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his father, now a carpenter’s labourer and his mother. In April 1911 Robert was employed as a boot finisher and was residing in the family home at 22, King Street, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his wife of one year, Florence Bott (nee Taylor), born 1889 in Bottesford, Leics., and their son Sidney, born 1910 in Melton Mowbray, Leics. On Friday June 1st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” - – The following casualties were officially reported on Friday:- WOUNDED. Bott, 23966 R. D. (Melton Mowbray). On Friday June 8th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MELTONIAN’S DEATH FROM WOUNDS.- Yesterday morning Mrs Bott, 22, King Street, Melton Mowbray, received an official notification that her husband, Pte. Robert Dexter Bott, of the Leicestershire Regiment died from wounds on May 28th in hospital at Mesopotamia. Deceased worked for Mr W. Leader for about 14 years, and has been out at the front over 12 months. The War Diary for today records. Nothing of note.
