He was the son of Harriett Hannah Johnson a charwoman, born 1875. Thomas Edward was a schoolboy and was born in 1898 in Aldershot, Hants., his siblings were, Hannah Lowell a mill worker, born 1893 in Benares, India, Charles, a labourer, born 1896 in Aden, South Arabia, Robert William a schoolboy, born 1901 and Jack, born 1902, the latter two siblings were both born in York, Yorkshire, in April 1911 the family home was at 5, Birmingham Row, Burton Street, Melton Mowbray, Leics. On Friday January 26th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” The following local casualties are officially reported. All are privates except where otherwise shown. The town shown against each soldier’s name is the home of his next-of-kin. From Wednesday’s list:- KILLED – LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. Johnson, 40713 T. (Melton Mowbray). On Wednesday January 24th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” - The following local casualties are reported under various dates. All are Private’s except where otherwise shown. The town shown against each soldiers name is the home of his next-of-kin. KILLED. LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT. Johnson, 40713 T. (Melton Mowbray). The War Diary for today records that the Battalion were in the Quarries sector and that the enemy’s Trench mortars were active in the morning with 1 other rank killed. Our artillery replied with great vigour and silenced them. During the night of 28th/29th enemy Trench mortars blew in D Company’s lines quite badly.
