The War Diary records: 19 Oct-16 – NEAR GUEUDECOURT Ref map GUEUDECOURT N.19. 5.10pm. In accordance with 89th Infantry Brigade wire B.M. 146, two Companies in FLERS SUPPORT moved up to front line to relieve two Companies 19th Battalion KING’S LIVERPOOL REGIMENT. Battalion Headquarters moved to FACTORY CORNER, with advanced Headquarters at GIRD TRENCH. Owing to bad state of trenches due to heavy rain, a most difficult relief was carried out by 5.00am. During the relief enemy heavily bombarded FACTORY TRENCH, and approaches to front line. No’s 3 and 4 Companies in FACTORY TRENCH sustained following casualties during relief. Killed, other ranks 7. Wounded, other ranks 9. Whilst four teams of Lewis Gunners were proceeding up AEROPLANE TRENCH to relieve front line they were caught in enemy barrage, four men were killed, and eleven wounded, out of the 25 Lewis Gunners, and all guns were buried. Sergeant MILLIN, in charge of these sections acted with commendable coolness and courage, and after attending to the wounded, salved all the buried guns. As trenches were rendered impossible, relief was carried out over the top. Telephonic communication between front line and Battalion Headquarters was rendered impossible by frequency of enemy barrages, consequently communication was kept up by runners between advanced Headquarters and Officer Commanding at FACTORY CORNER.
