He was the son of John Lindsey a Metropolitan Railway signalman, born 1851 in Whissendine, Rutland and his wife Ann North Lindsey (nee Whittle, married in the 1st quarter of 1872 in the Oakham, Rutland district), born 1848 in Whissendine. Horace was born in the 2nd quarter of 1889 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Laura, born 1873, Annie, born 1877 and Leah, born 1879 the latter three siblings were all born in Whissendine, Gertrude, born 1883 and Ernest Joseph, born 1887 the latter two siblings were both born in Stamford, Lincolnshire and Harold, born 1891 in Melton Mowbray, in April 1891 the family home was at 14, Charlotte Street, Melton Mowbray. In March 1901 Horace was residing in the family home at 14, Charlotte Street, Melton Mowbray, together with his father a signalman, his mother and siblings, Laura, Leah, a dressmaker, Ernest and Harold. In April 1911 Horace was employed as a journeyman baker and was residing in the family home at Gonalston, Nottinghamshire, together with his father, a gateman, his mother and siblings, Laura and Ernest a lithographer.
Horace attested into the Army on a Short Service engagement (For the Duration of the War.) on the 7th December 1914 in Nottingham. He gave his home address as 63, Woolmer Road, Nottingham, his age as 25 years and 7 months and his trade or calling as baker. He confirmed that he was unmarried. He gave his father, John Lindsey, of Gonalston, Nottinghamshire as his next of kin. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 10 inches in height, weighed 140 pounds and he had a chest measurement of between 34 and 38 inches. His physical development and eye sight were described as good. It was noted that he had upper and lower dentures. His record of service began when he joined the Depot of the Army Service Corps in Aldershot as a Private, service number S4/035991 on the 10/12/14. Transferred on the 28/12/14. Transferred to the 4th Field Bakery on the 26/1/15. Embarked aboard SS Marguerite from Southampton to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 18/5/15. Disembarked at Le Havre on the 19/5/15. Admitted to the 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital at Outreau, Boulogne on the 23/8/15. Died of pleurisy at 6.00pm, on the 27/8/16. A summary of his service records: Home Service, 7/12/14 – 17/5/15, 162 days. British Expeditionary Force, France, 18/5/15 – 27/8/16, 1 year 102 days. Total service 1 year and 264 days. Horace was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals. The following information was provided by Horace’s father John Lindsey on the 16th May 1919, and was witnessed and signed by T. S. R. Ferris, Clerk in Holy Orders, Gonalston, Notts on ARMY FORM W. 5080 (Information on deceased soldier’s family) Father of soldier, John Lindsey of Gonalston, Notts. Mother of soldier Ann North Lindsey of Gonalston, Notts. Full blood brothers of soldier, Ernest Joseph Lindsey, age 32. Harold Lindsey, age 28. Full blood sisters of soldier, Laura Lindsey, age 45. Annie Houghton, age 41. Leah Manchester, age 39 and Gertrude Davis, age 37.
The Officer Commanding 2nd Canadian Stationary Hospital, Outreau submitted the following report on the 2nd September 1916:-
S4/035991. Pte. Lindsey, L. A.S.C. 14/Field Bakery.
23.8.16. Several days ago had a chill, headache, pains in back and legs.
Patient pale, furred tongue, dyspnoea, alac nasi moving rapidly with respirations. Pulse, 126, respirations, 48. Pain in left chest. Respirations thoracic.
Palpitation, oedema of skin left chest.
V.R. increased over left chest.
Percussion: marked dullness left chest from axilla downwards and back.
Auscultation left chest.
Faint multiple crepitations as per diagram lower L. chest.
Restricted respiration, lower L. chest.
27.8.16. A progressive cyanosis of extremities. Patient succumbed to heart failure at 6 p.m., Aug. 27th, 1916.
The above mentioned was buried at Boulogne on the 29th August. Grave No. 3835.
On Friday September 1st 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – MORE MELTON CASUALTIES. PTE. HORACE LINDSEY. The news reached Melton Mowbray yesterday of the death of Pte. Horace Lindsey, son of Mr. J. Lindsey, Gonaldson, Notts, who for 20 years was a signalman on the Midland Railway at Melton, and was caretaker of the Baptist Chapel. Deceased who was 27 years of age, served his apprenticeship with Mr. Archer Dyson, baker, Melton Mowbray, and afterwards took a situation at Seymours confectionary establishment, in Arkwright street, Nottingham. He enlisted from there on the outbreak of the war, in the A.S.C., Bakery department and was sent out to the front 12 months last May, never having obtained a single day’s leave. He was taken ill on Monday week and died in hospital last Sunday, from pleurisy. Deceased was well known locally, and much respected.
On Friday August 31st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – IN MEMORIAM. LINDSEY.- In loving memory of Pte. Horace Lindsey, of the A.S.C., who died in Boulogne Aug. 27th 1916. Lost to sight but to memory ever dear. From Mother, Father, Ada and Sisters and Brothers at home and abroad.
