He was the son of Joseph Shuttlewood, a quarry worker, born 1859 in Chadwell, Leicestershire and his wife Dinah Shuttlewood (nee Skinner, married in the 4th quarter of 1888 in the Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire district), born 1863 in Scalford, Leicestershire. Horace Harold was born in the 1st quarter of 1897 in Chadwell, his siblings were, Mary Hannah, born 1888, Ernest, born 1890, Mark, born 1892, Sarah Jane, born 1894, Lilian May, born 1896, Elsie Maud, born 1898, Ivy Elizabeth, born 1899 and John Joseph, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Chadwell, in March 1901 the family home was at The Cottage, Wycomb and Chadwell, Leics. In April 1911 Horace was residing in the family home at Chadwell, together with his father, an agricultural labourer, his mother and siblings, Mark, an iron ore miner, Elsie, a schoolgirl, Ivy, a schoolgirl, John, a schoolboy, William, a schoolboy, born 1902, Phyllis Emma, a schoolgirl, born 1904, Alfred Cyril Hugh, a schoolboy, born 1906 and Gertrude Agnes, born 1908, the latter four siblings were all born in Chadwell.
The War Diary records: 29 Mar-16 - Battalion on carrying and digging fatigues for 28th Brigade and XII Division.
On Friday May 19th 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – MELTON SOLDIER KILLED. Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Shuttlewood, of 9, Soho, Melton Mowbray, received an official intimation last Friday that their son Pte. Horace Harold Shuttlewood, of the Leicesters, was drowned at the Persian Gulf on March 29. Deceased was only 19 years of age, was formerly a farm servant in the employ of Mr. Butler, Clifton Manor Farm, and enlisted last May. One of his brothers, Pte. Mark Shuttlewood, was so badly wounded, that he will be crippled for life, and has been discharged from the army, while another brother, Pte. Ernest Shuttlewood, has been in France since the outbreak of the war. Much sympathy will be felt for the bereaved parents, his father having been an invalid for considerably over two years.
