Son of John Shepherd and Emily Stalman Shepherd (nee Clinch) Lived at 97 Kings Road Melton.
Killed in an ambush by Japanese soldiers whilst successfully warning his commander of approaching enemy forces, alongside the rest of his patrol. 1941.

A letter was sent by Captain Edward Dobson to John's mother, informing her of her son's death:

1st May 1946

Dear Mrs Shepherd,

I am writing to you on behalf of Lieut Colonel CE M------ DSO MC and the serving Officers, Warrant Officers, NCDs and Privates of the 1st Leicestershire Regiment, Malaya, to offer you our deepest sympathy in the great loss you have suffered by the death of your son.
I knew him well as he was in my company and did ---------for me in November 1941. A nicer chap I could not wish to meet. He was very quiet but extremely conscientious.

He was a member of the section I had to send out under an officer to warn me of the approach of the enemy. This section warned us in time but were all killed doing it. There is no doubt that your son and his companions died a very brave death and that they saved many lives by so doing.

Please again accept our deep sympathy.

Yours sincerely,

EY Dobson Capt.

Former Adjutant 1st Leicestershire Regiment, Malaya
