He was the son of Henry Sopp, born 1860 in Wiltshire and his wife Martha Sopp, born 1864 (nee Bennett, married on the 1st December 1884 in St. James’ Church Hungerford, Berkshire). Albert was born on the 5th February 1894.
Albert enlisted into the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on the 9th January 1916 in Winnipeg, Canada, he gave his date and place of birth as the 5th February 1894 in Hayfield, Manitoba, Canada, his trade or calling as farmer and his next of kin as his father, Henry Sopp of Hayfield, Manitoba, Canada. He stated that he was unmarried. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 10 inches in height and had a chest measurement of between 33½ and 38 inches, his complexion was described as dark, he had brown eyes his hair colour was black. It was noted that he had an enlargement of the second joint of his large toe on the left foot. He gave his religion as Church of England.
The War Diary records: 5-8 Jun-17 – CHATEAU DE LA HAIE. After re-supply, the Battalion was engaged from early morning to noon each day in Battalion training. Afternoons were devoted to athletics and the evenings to entertainment by Y.M.C.A. Weather exceptionally favourable.
NOTE: The family information contained in this entry is uncorroborated, and therefore may not relate to this casualty. The service documents, war diary entry and place of burial relate to this soldier, however no definite connection has yet been discovered that could link him to the name inscribed upon the memorial in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
