He was the son of Robert William Knight, an iron works clerk, born 1856 in Kettering, Northants., and his wife Rose Annie Knight (nee Warner), born 1857 in Raunds, Northants. Aubrey Roland was born in 1895 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., his siblings were, Winnie, a draper’s assistant, born 1883, Evelyn Mary, born 1884, Robert, a draughtsman, born 1885 and Hilda, born 1888, the latter four siblings were all born in Kettering, Northants., Edgar, born 1890, Arthur, born 1892, Cyril, born 1894 and Doris, born 1898, the latter four siblings were all born in Melton Mowbray, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Argyle Terrace, 30, Nottingham Road, Melton Mowbray, Leics. In April 1911 Aubrey was employed as a butcher’s apprentice and was residing in the family home at 30, Nottingham Road, Melton Mowbray, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Evelyn, and assistant home keeper, Robert an iron works pattern maker, Edgar, an iron works clerk, Arthur, an iron works clerk and Doris a schoolgirl. On Friday September 28th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR” – MELTONIAN DIES FROM WOUNDS. On Friday evening the sad news reached Mr and Mrs R. Knight, 30, Nottingham Road, Melton Mowbray, that their youngest son, Pte. Aubrey Knight, Notts. and Derby Regiment, had died from wounds the previous Monday evening. On Thursday Mr Knight had received an intimation from the War Office that his son was wounded in the thigh and ear on Sunday, Sept. 16th, and the next morning the following letter came to hand: - “No.3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, B.E.F., France. Sept. 18th 1917. Dear Mr Knight, - It is my sad duty to inform you of the death of your son, Pte. A. R. Knight, No. 71858, - Notts. and Derby’s, at this station. He was admitted on Sunday Sept. 16th, and died last evening, Sept. 17th, at 7.20pm. He was wounded in the head, but was not conscious whilst here. His end was peaceful, and everything possible was done for his comfort. He will be buried in Lissenhock (sic) Cemetery, beside many of his comrades who like himself, have made the supreme sacrifice in a great cause. You have our deep sympathy, and I pray that God of all consolation and comfort may sustain and strengthen you in this sad hour. Yours sincerely, A. H. Dencon, chaplain.” Deceased who was 23 years of age, served his apprenticeship with Mr J. Lane, butcher, Melton Mowbray, afterwards taking a situation in Nottingham. From there he enlisted in the Notts. and Derby Regiment in 1915.
