He was the son of William Baldwin, a farmer, born 1846 in Cockfield, Suffolk and his wife Anna Jane Baldwin (nee Provost, married in the 3rd quarter of 1879 in the Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire district), born 1852 in Thorney, Cambridgeshire. Austin Provost, a schoolboy was born in the 1st quarter of 1883 in Great Barton, Suffolk, and was baptised on the 25th January 1883 in Holy Innocents Church, Great Barton, his siblings were, William Bertrum, a schoolboy, born 1880, and baptised on the 5th September 1880 in Holy Innocents Church, Great Barton and Clement, a schoolboy, born 1885, and baptised on the 22nd March 1885 in Holy Innocents Church, Great Barton, both his siblings were born in Great Barton, in April 1891 the family home was at The Elms, Mill Road, Great Barton, Thingoe, Suffolk. Austin’s father died on the 10th May 1892 in Great Barton. In March 1901 Austin was employed as a wine and spirit merchant’s clerk and was residing at Elms Farm, Great Barton, Thingoe, this being the family home of his paternal uncle Frank Baldwin, a farmer born 1857 in Cockfield. In April 1911 Austin was employed as an auctioneer, surveyor and valuer and was residing as a boarder at 13, Church Street, Market Harborough, Leicestershire. Austin had been a Freemason and was initiated into the St. Peter’s Lodge, No. 1330 on the 17th November 1911. He latterly resided at 182, Park Road, Peterborough, Northamptonshire. He was killed in action during an attack on the German-held positions on the east bank of the Canal du Nord near Marquion.
The War Diary records: 26 Sept-18 - MORCHIES – BEAUMETZ. Battalion resting during the day. (this is “Y” day viz: Operation Order 94). Reinforcements 10 other ranks. Night of 26th/27th Battalion marched to assembly positions for attack on 27th.
The War Diary records: 27 Sep-18 - MORCHIES – BEAUMETZ. Zero was 5.20am – see operation order 94 and appendix A. Casualties:- Captain T. M. MEE (wounded). 2nd Lieutenant W. L. GREY (died of wounds). 2nd Lieutenant A. P. BALDWIN (killed in action). Other ranks, killed 12, wounded 132, missing 10, gassed 2.
