He was the son of Charles and Annie Newham Amoore of Moorish Castle, Gibralter. Charles John Newnham was born on the 23rd July 1897 in Gibralter, in April 1911 he was a schoolboy, and was residing at Park Gardens, Alfold, Billinghurst, Sussex, this being the family home of his paternal grandparents, Frederick Jeffrey Amoore, a general dealer, born 1839 in Patcham, Sussex and his wife Elizabeth Ann Amoore, born 1840 in Wellington, Sussex. Charles enlisted into the Royal Navy for a period of 12 years that would commence on the 23rd July 1915. His medical examination showed him to be 5 foot 1½ inches in height, with a chest measurement of 32 inches, dark brown hair, brown eyes and his complexion was described as dark, it was noted he had a scar on his right knee. His service history began as a Boy Class II aboard HMS Impregnable on the 29/11/12. Promoted to Boy Telegraphist aboard Impregnable, 4/4/13 – 17/10/13. Southampton, 18/10/13 – 6/1/15. Bellona, 7/1/15, Promoted Ordinary Telegraphist aboard Bellona, 29/4/15. Promoted Telegraphist aboard Bellona, 7/10/15. Promoted Leading Telegraphist aboard Revenge, 6/2/16 – 7/10/16. Dolphin, 8/10/16 – 12/3/17. Maidstone (E.34), 13/3/17 – 7/6/17. Maidstone (E.34), 8/6/17 – 20/7/18 when he was recorded as losing his life whilst on duty, when his vessel, Submarine E.34 was mined in the North Sea.
