He was the son of Albert Edward Broughton a framework knitter, born in the January quarter of 1869 in Wigston Magna, Leicestershire (son on George Broughton, 1848 and Rose Ann Phipps, 1849-1827) and his wife Harriet Gilbert Broughton (nee Potterton, married in the April quarter of 1892 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district)), a hosiery trade seamer, born on the 12th December 1869 in Oadby, Leicestershire (daughter of George Gilbert, 1850 and Sarah Potterton, 1853-1924). Alonzo Harry was born in in the July quarter of 1892 in Wigston Magna, his siblings were George Edward Potterton, born on the 31st August 1889 in Oadby, Mabel Ellen, born in the January quarter of 1895 and Eveline, born on the 20th November 1899, the latter two siblings were both born in Wigston Magna, in March 1901 the family home was at 21, Burgess Street, Wigston Magna. In April 1911 Alonzo was employed as a hosiery trade stocking maker and was residing in the family home at Burgess Street, Wigston Magna, together with his father, a hosiery trade sock maker, his mother and siblings, George, a hosiery trade underwear maker, Eveline, a schoolgirl, Laurence Wilfred, a schoolboy, born on the 16th December 1903, Harold Cecil, born on the 17th July 1906 and Maurice Samuel, born on the 23rd August 1910, the latter three siblings were all born in Wigston Magna. In the October quarter of 1913, Alonzo married Agnes Johnson in the Blaby, Leicestershire registration, district, Agnes was born on the 12th July 1891 in Wigston Magna. Alonzo’s widow, Agnes died on the 4th June 1936 in Wigston Magna, at the age of 45, never having remarried.
Alonzo’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers. All that is known of Alonzo’s period of military service is that he had enlisted/attested in Leicester into the Army Service Corps, and had been allotted the service number 206924. He is then recorded as having been transferred as a Private to the Machine Gun Corps where he was allotted the service number 103667. It is unclear into which theatre of war he first embarked, however as he was not awarded the 1914-15 Star, it is safe to assume that his first entry into the theatre of war was sometime after the 31st December 1915. He was on a date unknown posted to the 238th Company of the Machine Gun Corps and it is known that this Company embarked in Marseilles in early October 1917 en route to Mesopotamia (Iraq), joining the 54th Indian Infantry Brigade at Hayaida on the 30th October 1917. With the exception of the War Diary entries, that relate to his Company’s movements and daily occurrences, there is no information regarding Alonzo’s military service. Alonzo died from typhus in the 19th Casualty Clearing Station, Samiarth, Mesopotamia on the 21st May 1918 and was buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery, Iraq. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. On the 3rd December 1918, Alonzo’s widow was awarded a weekly Army Pension of thirteen shillings and nine pence to commence on the 2nd December 1918.
NOTE: The War Memorial in All Saint’s Churchyard, Wigston Magna records the name H.H. Broughton, however extensive research has failed to discover the name of Broughton associated with Wigston Magna with those initials, and therefore, my assumption is that it refers in fact to Alonzo, but the first initial has been recorded incorrectly.
