Sidney was the son of John Thomas Tilley and Mary Ann Tilley and the husband of Gwendolene Emily Emma Tilley of Great Bowden.
He had a son, named John, and his siblings were Evelyn, Harold, Mabel and Charlie.

His death was reported in the Market Harborough Advertiser on 19/01/1945:

'Great Bowden Man Killed in Action'
News has been received that Pte Sidney Eric Tilley, son of the late Mr and Mrs John Tilley of Great Bowden, has been killed in action in Italy. He lived at Holmfield, Knight's End Road, Great Bowden. Pte Tilley joined the Army in 1940 and went abroad in 1943. He served in Africa, Sicily- where he was wounded in the hand- and in Italy, was at Anzio and Cassino and was killed in the attack on the Gothic Line. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Roberts, daughter of Mr and Mrs W Roberts, daughter of Mr and Mrs W Roberts, of Little Bowden, and a two-year-old son. He was employed by Messrs R and WH Symington and played for their football team.

He was remembered by his family in the Market Harborough Advertiser of 13th December 1946, on the occasion of what would have been his 34th birthday.
