Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the son of Mr and Mrs T. Middleton of Lyddington, Rutland. He leaves a widow and three children. Before enlisting, he had been employed by his father in farming. He had previously served through the South African Campaign with the Leicestershire Yeomanry. Enlisting this time in the Royal Garrison Artillery, he embarked for France on the 1st October 1917, and only a matter of weeks later was wounded in the right knee and left hand, the injured leg having to be amputated, he subsequently died in Rouen Hospital France. When the news of his serious condition reached England his father an octogenarian, was himself on his deathbed, predeceasing his son by a matter of days, sadly when news of her husband’s death arrived, Mrs Middleton was attending her father in law’s funeral.
