He was the son of Daniel Foulkes, a railway clerk, born on the 15th August 1860 in Liverpool, Lancashire and baptised on the 27th August 1860 in St. Peter’s Church, Liverpool and his wife Frances Foulkes (nee Bamford, married in the 2nd quarter of 1887 in the St. Pancras, Middlesex district), born 1864 in Stafford. William Bamford was born in the 3rd quarter of 1893 in Watford, Hertfordshire and was baptised on the 4th March 1894 in St. Mary’s Church, Watford, he had one sibling, Hugh Thomas S., born on the 26th September 1898 in Watford, in March 1901 the family home was at 29, Denmark Street, Watford. After the March 1901 census, no trace can be found of William in the census records for April 1911.
William’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted in Birmingham into the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, being allotted the service number 2827, and was posted as a Private to the 1/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (T.F.) and it was with this unit that he first entered the theatre of war in France on the 22nd March 1915. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
