He was the son of Charles Bond, a domestic gardener, born 1860 in Overton, Hampshire and his wife Emily A. Bond, born 1863 in Macclesfield, Cheshire. Charles was born in the 1st quarter of 1892 in Holdenby, Northamptonshire, his siblings were, George, a gas fitter, born 1885, Edward Arthur, a post office telegraph boy, born on the 15th February 1887 and Gertrude Phoebe, born 1889, the latter three siblings were all born in Holdenby, Northamptonshire, Percy, born 1895 and Lilian Annie, born 1898, the latter two siblings were both born in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at Georges Square, Lutterworth, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a domestic gardener and was residing in the family home at The Tile House, Denham, Buckinghamshire, residing there was his father, a domestic gardener, his mother and siblings, Percy, a domestic gardener, Lilian, a schoolgirl and Henry Pryer, born 1902 in Lutterworth, Leicestershire. His elder brother Edward was killed in the loss of his ship.
The War Diary records: - 3 May-15 - Enemy’s Infantry active in early morning – 7:50am Enemy tried to rush centre trench but were stopped by rifle fire. 2:45pm Very heavy bombardment of trenches. 4:00pm Enemy in possession of wood close to left trench (D.10.c.). Parts of left trench blown to pieces and evacuated. Heavy musketry fire. – Moved Support Company to ridge on right of Hampshires; some in communication trench and some in open, and some in right of Hampshires support trench. Heavily shelled during movement and for next two hours.
