He was the son of Frederick Whiteman, a quarryman, born 1852 in Bedfordshire, and his wife Eliza Whiteman (nee Olive, married 1873), born 1855 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics. Sidney was born in 1898 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., his siblings were, Frederick, a slab trade worker, born 1880, Mary Ann, an elastic trade weaver, born 1882, John Henry, a polisher, born 1886, Susan, born 1890 and Arthur, born 1892, all his siblings were born in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., also residing with the family was his maternal uncle, John Olive, a stone trade worker, born 1852 in Barrow upon Soar, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at North Street, Barrow upon Soar, Leics. In April 1911 Sidney was employed as an office boy and was residing in the family home at North Street, Barrow upon Soar, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Harry, a granite worker, John, a factory worker and Arthur, a farm labourer, also residing with the family was his maternal uncle, John Olive. Sidney was baptised on the 3rd December 1899 at Barrow upon Soar, Leics. On Friday November 9th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS.” – BARROW ON SOAR. – LOCAL SOLDIER KILLED. – Mr. F. Whiteman, of North Street, Barrow on Soar has been notified that his youngest son, Private Sidney Whiteman, has been killed in action.
