He was the son of William and Elizabeth Needham of Oakham, Rutland, and the husband of Helen Needham of 147, Brooke Road, Oakham, Rutland. He left two children. He was in Winnipeg, Canada at the outbreak of war, and enlisted in the 8th Winnipeg Rifles. He embarked for France on the 27th March 1916 with the 27th Canadians. He was helping a wounded comrade near Hill 70 when he was killed by a bullet. His enlistment documents record that he gave his wife, Helen Needham of 28, Mansfield Road, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada as his next of kin. He gave his trade or calling as Stationary Engineer. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 7 ½ inches in height and had a chest measurement of 34 to 39 inches. His complexion was described as medium with blue eyes and medium hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.
