He was the son of James Munday, a railway platelayer, born 1862 in Langham, Rutland and his wife Elizabeth Ann Munday (nee Hubbard, married 1894), born 1867 in Langham, Rutland. Ernest James was born in 1896 in Langham, Rutland, his siblings were, Dorothy E., born 1898 and Cyril Tom, born 1900, both his siblings were born in Langham, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Brewers Buildings, Burley Road, Langham, Rutland. In April 1911 Ernest was employed as a bottle washer and was residing in the family home at Langham, Rutland, together with his father, now a railway stores labourer, his mother and siblings, Cyril, John Wilfred, born 1907 and Kathleen Nellie, born 1909, the latter two siblings were both born in Langham, Rutland. Ernest enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment in Oakham, Rutland on the 18th November 1914. On the 16th July 1915 he suffered a gunshot wound to the neck and spine and was admitted to the 1st North Midland Division Field Ambulance, on the 18th July he was transferred to No. 13 General Hospital at Boulogne, and on the 5th August he was conveyed by Hospital Ship to England where on the 6th August he was admitted to King George’s Hospital, here his condition gradually deteriorated and he died on the 28th August. Ernest was buried in Langham Churchyard with full Military Honours.
